An Interoperability Mandate Would Serve the Public Interest
Washington, DC – Today, in reply comments filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC or Commission), CCA – The Competitive Carriers Association urged the Commission to implement an interoperability mandate by a date certain and then convene an industry advisory committee to resolve the technical issues needed to make interoperability in the Lower 700 MHz a reality. An interoperability requirement would encourage competitive carriers to build out their networks, benefit consumers and spur economic growth.
“AT&T should not be allowed to unilaterally undermine a pro-competition policy to advance their self-interest,” said CCA President & CEO Steven K. Berry. “It is abundantly clear that AT&T is not interested in finding an industry solution to interoperability, and it is time for the Commission to ensure the public interest is served by implementing an interoperability requirement. The Commission should set a date certain for the industry to transition to an interoperable Band Class 12, and then can utilize its many resources to bring together industry experts and stakeholders to help resolve the real technical challenges to achieving interoperability.”
Berry continued, “Of all wireless carriers, only one has come out against interoperability in the 700 MHz band, and its reason is obvious – AT&T wants to protect its dominant position from competition. Save AT&T, the competitive wireless industry is united in its call for an interoperability mandate. I strongly urge the FCC to heed their call, and I look forward to working with the Commission to promptly solve this critical issue for competitive carriers and every consumer.”
