FCC Must Implement Policies that Promote Competition

Washington, DC – Today, in comments filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC or Commission), CCA – The Competitive Carriers Association encouraged the FCC to continue to pursue its goal of removing unnecessary regulatory hurdles and accelerating the deployment of a terrestrial broadband network in the 2 GHz MSS Band.  Additionally, the Commission should implement service rules that ensure deployment of AWS-4 spectrum in a manner that promotes competition.

“Over the past decade, the wireless industry has become dangerously concentrated,” said CCA President & CEO Steven K. Berry.  “In looking to make as much spectrum available for mobile broadband use as possible, it is critical for the Commission to maximize the pro-competitive potential of the 2 GHz spectrum band.”

Berry continued, “Many of our members desperately need access to additional spectrum, and it is vital that the FCC take certain steps to ensure the service rules for the AWS-4 Band truly increase competition for mobile broadband services and do not strengthen the duopoly power enjoyed by the largest wireless carriers.  If properly structured to ensure the timely deployment of a nationwide network that supports roaming, the AWS-4 spectrum could bring enormous benefits to consumers and economic growth, and the FCC should work to ensure this becomes a reality.”
