Interoperability will Drive Economic Growth
Washington, DC – Today, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski testified before the Senate Appropriations Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee in a hearing titled, “Expanding Broadband Access, Promoting Innovation, and Protecting Consumers in a Communications Revolution: Fiscal Year 2013 Resource Needs for the Federal Communications Commission.” CCA – The Competitive Carriers Association thanks the Subcommittee for holding the hearing. CCA agrees with Chairman Genachowski that broadband deployment presents numerous benefits to competitiveness in the wireless industry and the American economy and encourages the Commission to require interoperability to achieve these important goals.
In a statement, CCA President & CEO Steven K. Berry said, “I thank the Subcommittee for the hearing on this important issue, as the wireless industry has great potential to drive revenue to the economy. I whole-heartedly agree with Chairman Genachowski that broadband deployment is critical to the economy and competitiveness in the wireless industry; however, interoperability must be required for this goal to be achieved.”
Berry continued, “Chairman Genachowski highlighted incentive auctions as a way to generate revenue, and interoperability will help generate higher auction revenue. Why would any carrier risk capital on spectrum they’re not even sure they can use? An interoperability requirement will give competitive carriers the assurance they need to bid at auction – thus promoting competition and increasing bids. An interoperability requirement is the solution to restoring competition and benefitting the economy, and I look forward to our continued work with the FCC and Congress on this very important issue.”
