Restricting FCC’s Auction Authority will Harm Consumers

Washington, DC– Today, CCA (Competitive Carriers Association) and a broad group of trade associations, businesses, and public interest groups signed a letter highlighting the need to ensure the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) maintains existing authority to shape future auctions to benefit consumers, users, and carriers, and to maximize returns to American taxpayers.

In a statement CCA President & CEO Steven K. Berry said, “We are very supportive of Congress’ efforts to make additional wireless spectrum available for mobile broadband and commercial opportunities.  The FCC is the expert agency, and we are very concerned that current provisions would unduly restrict the Commission’s ability to maximize the use of finite and valuable spectrum resources.  Spectrum is vital to the future of competitive carriers and the growth of the industry.”

Berry continued, “Congress has the opportunity to use its oversight functions to ensure policy continuity – this is not the right place or order to unilaterally restrict FCC flexibility.  I hope Congress will consider the potentially detrimental impact for consumers and the U.S. Treasury and modify these provisions to preserve the FCC’s existing authority to respond to changes in the ever-changing wireless industry.”
