Verizon Wireless/SpectrumCo Deal Does
Nothing to Promote a Competitive Marketplace
Washington, DC– In a public interest statement filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Verizon Wireless and SpectrumCo argued that their application to acquire SpectrumCo’s AWS licenses would serve the public interest. The statement itself highlights the policy issues – data roaming, interoperability and device exclusivity – that are critical to every competitive carrier. CCA (Competitive Carriers Association) believes the FCC has the authority and the responsibility to advance the competitive policy framework to ensure all carriers have the opportunity to compete as the industry moves to a 4G technology world.
In a statement, CCA President & CEO Steven K. Berry said, “We have serious reservations about the proposed Verizon Wireless/SpectrumCo transaction in its current form. The proposed spectrum sale would exacerbate the current difficulties competitive carriers have seeking data roaming agreements, obtaining devices, and entering the marketplace. Verizon Wireless and SpectrumCo recognized these challenges in their filing, but fail to suggest common-sense solutions that would ensure the transfer would inure to the public interest.”
“This deal does not enhance the build-out of 4G services in America, and contrary to petitioners’ statements, it will make it more difficult to roll out new services and further frustrate efforts of competitive carriers in the marketplace. Chairman Genachowski recently said, ‘Competition is the engine of our free market economy and a cornerstone of the FCC’s mandate.’ Clearly, in reviewing the Verizon Wireless/SpectrumCo transaction, the Chairman and the FCC must ensure competitive connectivity is addressed.”
CCA is the nation’s leading association for competitive wireless providers serving rural and regional areas of the United States. The licensed service area of CCA’s more than 100 members covers 95 percent of the nation.
